#WindowsXP End of Life Affects MS Security Essentials

Standard

The bell tolls for thee, Windows XP.  With the extended support from Microsoft being suspended in three months (April 8th, 2014), security updates, along with other support (see this excellent post: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/01/security-essentials-for-windows-xp-will-die-when-the-os-does/ ) will be suspended as well.  This is a bit concerning as I personally know many small businesses that have not upgraded yet and in many cases, feel they cannot.  I have seen cases where small businesses are running industrial control software that will not run on Vista, Win 7 or 8.  I’m not sure what they are going to do… other than pressure the makers of the control software to create new, compatible versions.

I have this feeling we are going to see a pandemic of Windows XP related viruses and zero day exploits.  Will this be a major outbreak or just a whimper?  Time will tell.

[UPDATED] Microsoft to extend Windows XP anti-malware updates one year.  So, some potential relief for small businesses…
